Bachelor Party

Monday, April 7th, 2008

Finally, I present: the bachelor party jam session of October 12, 2007 featuring AJ on drums and Gino on vocals, guitar, and iPhone. What a fun night. Great drumming by AJ, hilarious spoken-word interjections by Gino. I had a ball with that synthesizer. I’m so glad I have a recording of this night and I thank AJ very much for recording and mixing it.

Highlights (imho):

0104 John Titor’s Funkadelic Time Machine.mp3 — A voyage through time and space… and funk.

0106 Pot Roast.mp3 — The Pot Roast was cookin’ and we were jammin’. Actually, the Pork Roast was cookin’, but we were still jammin’. (video)

0111 I’ll Follow You Into the Dark.mp3 — Unfortunately, we didn’t get a recording of me playing this at the wedding, but this was a pretty good practice run.

0202 Subtle Waves.mp3 — Quiet, very low key jam.

206 Take a Seat Trip John.mp3 — AJ came up with this name. He has no idea what it means either.

208 Sudden Disco Jam Pt 2.mp3 — Wild o_0

0302 The Same Old Town Is Nowhere to Hide.mp3 — Pretty good, happy jam.

0306 Bachelor Party Anthem.mp3 — Inspired by the advice of a demented elf.

0316 Wicked Little Town.mp3 — Gino solo, totally rockin’ the Hedwig.

Young Folks

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

Midlake was excellent at the Metro on Wednesday. I took a few videos, which I’m uploading to YouTube now. I learned an important lesson about bootlegging videos though. If you are standing really close, you get great video, but bad sound. The drums were so loud that the audio is distorted on every beat. I’ll post the videos anyway, for those curious what Midlake is like live.

Anyways, the purpose of this post is to spread some praise about the opening act — the cowboy-booted, pony-tailed, (and extremely cute!) Kentuckian Dawn Landes. The band’s name, she told us, is different each night and that tonight it was Maker’s Marker, after the Kentucky bourbon. I’d say they were an art rock band with country leanings. I’d say art rock only because they have a cellist, rather than a bassist.

Here they’re playing a cover of Peter, Bjorn and John’s “Young Folks.” Rather than whistling the “asian riff” chorus, they played it simultaneously on flute and kazoo.

A cool song called “Straight Lines.”

Bonus: While uploading the Young Folks video, I discovered this awesome bluegrass version on YouTube that she did with some “old folks.”

So I was biking around Wrigleyville, listening to an EP of remixes of the song Roscoe by Midlake. I was thinking that this EP kicked so much ass, that I’d make a post about it. There are six versions of this one song on the album, and I have yet to get sick of hearing it. At some point, I happened upon Roscoe St. and took a picture. The link is to a remix by Cassettes Won’t Listen.

Bonus: The official video for the song is not great, but I really dig this fan-made video.

Beach Ball

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

Here is Ryan joining in on a game of “kick around the beach ball” with some new friends at Lollapalooza. This was while we were waiting for Yo La Tengo to come on. Iggy Pop is playing across the way, providing the soundtrack.
